In
this Chapter, Hobbes makes a few intriguing discussions. When he starts to
discuss of what and who a person is, you start to really put your “thinking
caps” on. When you search what the meaning of person is, it says “A person is a being, such as a HUMAN
that has certain capacities or attributes constituting personhood, which in turn
is defined differently by different authors in different disciplines, and by
different cultures in different times and places.” A person, whether you are
male or female, is considered a “human being.” But according to Hobbes, his
outlooks and thoughts come from a greater and more profound motive.
When Hobbes starts to discuss what a “natural person” is, you
start to think and look more deeply into his thoughts. He states that when the
actions and words of a person is considered their own, then they fall into the
category of being a “natural person.”
Hobbes then starts to discuss his views and thoughts on what an
artificial or feigned person is. He states that when a person doesn’t “act on
their own and acts with actions of others,” is considered to be an artificial
person. I do have to agree with him with his point. In my point of view, if you
follow the lead of others and go along with what they do or what to do or say,
then you aren’t acting like yourself. You are a complete different person,
which is why you’d be considered as an “artificial person” in Hobbes eyes.
In Conclusion, with Hobbes point of view on what person is, I’d
have to say I agree and disagree with some of his opinions. A “human being”
isn’t someone that can be faked. I understand that many people pretend to be
someone they are not and act as someone they are not, but at the end of the
day, we are all human, we are all one.
